The 2022 Subaru Ascent is the full-size SUV that sits at the intersection where uncompromising quality meets an affordable price. While many full-size SUVs pride themselves on luxury features that price themselves out of the average family's budget, Subaru takes into consideration the importance of safety, convenience, and performance while providing shoppers with a roomy three-row interior that is filled to the brim with the latest in technology and modern comfort features. This philosophy echoes loudly throughout the design of the 2022 Ascent, which further elevates the already prestigious nameplate with some brand new model year features.

The 2022 model year is highlighted by the all-new debut of the Ascent Onyx Edition. The strikingly debonair look is defined by its glossy-black finish on the exterior, including special badging and matching 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The distinct black exterior is accented by the Subaru StarTex water-repellant interior material, giving the vehicle its own unique design personality. The Onyx Edition also comes standard with various safety and tech features, including reverse automatic braking, a power rear gate, keyless access, and a heated steering wheel.

The 2022 Subaru Ascent is available in five trims, including the base Ascent, the Premium, the new Onyx Edition, the Limited, and the Touring. Each trim offers shoppers something distinct and unique to help separate them from the rest, with key comfort, tech, and luxury features for those willing to experience a higher quality of driving from Subaru. The Ascent is available in eight colors, including Autumn Green Metallic, Abyss Blue Pearl, Brilliant Bronze Metallic, Crystal Black Silica, Crimson Red Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, Magnetite Gray Metallic, and Crystal White Pearl.

Performance

Plenty of Power for a Large SUV

The 2022 Subaru Ascent model year line-up is powered by the reputable Boxer engine. The entire trim-line has the turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder pumping 260 horsepower through the frame and 277 pound-feet of torque. This gives the Ascent plenty of gusto for a full-size, three-row SUV. The engine is mated to a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission, also known as a CVT.

However, for those who prefer to maintain control over how they shift and maximize the Ascent's engine revolutions, an 8-speed manual mode is available that can be utilized thanks to the steering wheel paddle shifters. This allows drivers to take complete control over how the Ascent shifts and better utilize how the drivetrain exhibits a smooth riding experience. Additionally, all of the trims come standard with the all-wheel drive X-Mode, which is designed to give the Ascent lots of stability and traction control.

X-Mode controls the engine throttle, the transmission's torque output, as well as the Vehicle Dynamic Control System. This all works hand-in-hand to ensure that the Ascent is stable across a wide number of different surfaces, including snow, sand, sleet, ice, or wet pavement. X-Mode also helps ensure stability with Hill Descent Control, which works effortlessly to maintain maneuverability and speed, all while descending steep hills.

X-Mode also works when trailering up to 5,000 pounds worth of cargo so that there is no sway, and the Ascent can smoothly travel to its destination with its cargo in tow. The best part about it is that you can control X-Mode with the simple press of a button. This makes it convenient to activate for stability and traction control whenever you need it most.

Design

A Design That Stands Out From the Competition

The 2022 Subaru Ascent retains the undeniable design that has helped separate it from the competition on the market. Modest lines and refined accents help define the exterior of the Ascent, as it sits on a 113.8-inch wheelbase. The Ascent also has a ground clearance of 8.7 inches, making it more than capable of tackling a wide variety of different road conditions. With raised roof rails and available chrome exterior accents, you can enjoy the Ascent as much for its functionality as its stylish visual appearance. The exterior is complemented by a large and accommodating interior.

The spacious cabin translates into an interior passenger volume of 153.5 cubic feet of space, which stretches across three rows of seating. The Ascent can be configured for 7 or 8 passengers while also allowing for up to 43.5 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row. In total, with the second and third-row folded, you can make use of up to 75.6 cubic feet of cargo space.

You can indulge in various comfort features as well, such as a power-sliding panoramic glass moonroof on select trims, along with 8-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats. Available StarTex and leather-trimmed upholstery can help increase the comfort and luxury levels, along with the ivory or silver carbon-fiber patterned accent trimming throughout the cabin. Alternatively, you can really turn up the quality with the Limited trim and its wood-grain-patterned accent trimming, which gives the cabin an utterly unique look compared to the other Ascent models.

The best part about it is that the size of the Ascent doesn't completely diminish its travel capacity. You can achieve a maximum of 500 miles worth of range on a full tank, which breaks down to an average of 21 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway. This makes the Ascent not only comfortable, functional, and spacious but also quite economical, too.

Technology

All the Tech You Want

The 2022 Subaru Ascent may have a sleek design and a powerful Boxer engine at its core, making it both stylish and performance-ready, but that doesn't mean it's bereft of the latest in tech. In fact, the Ascent takes pride in not only being spacious, comfortable, performance-ready, and luxury-oriented but all of those features are complemented by state-of-the-art technology. As if the X-Mode wasn't ideal enough on the performance front, when it comes to safety tech, the Ascent excels with passive and active safety features.

From high beam assist and reverse automatic braking to four-wheel anti-lock brakes, many of the basic accouterments of safety technology are present. But there are also highly valued safety features such as the driver-assisted EyeSight technology, which helps assist drivers with maintaining stability and driving presence, in connection with features such as blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. There is also lane keep assist along with features such as a brake override system and aids to help with aggressive traffic or busy street conditions, such as the 180-degree front-view monitor and HD rear-vision camera.

On the technological front, when it comes to convenience, there are power rear gate and height memory functions, as well as keyless access and power-adjustable windows with anti-pinch protection. A 3-spoke steering wheel with integrated controls and dual front and second-row USB ports all come standard. However, if four USB ports aren't enough, third-row USB ports are also available. And speaking of the third row, tri-zone climate control comes standard along with three-row air vents across the entire trim line.

When it comes to infotainment and media control, an available Starlink 8.0-inch multimedia navigation system helps provide you with everything you could want when it comes to vehicle health monitoring, telematics, and streaming media functionality. This includes integrated support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as SiriusXM Satellite Radio and Traffic app functionality. With Bluetooth wireless connectivity, you have voice-activated controls at your beck and call, as well as easy access to a number of app controls and utility profile functions thanks to a multi-touch gesture-based touchscreen. With added hands-free phone activation and text messaging, as well as 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot compatibility, you have everything you could possibly want out of the Ascent when it comes to infotainment and network connectivity.

To top it all off, the base Ascent gives you access to a six-speaker sound system, but if that's not enough for you, you can take advantage of a Harman Kardon Quantum Surround Sound system. This gives the Ascent not only a great line-up of base functions on the entry-level trim but also a litany of amazing features for the upper-end trims as well. On the technology front, there's no aspect of the Ascent that will leave you wanting.
